Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Breast (Breast MRI)
Magnetic resonance imaging of the breast (MRI) is a radiation-free examination conducted on a magnetic resonance scanner with the administration of intravenous contrast material. It is used adjunctively to investigate findings from digital mammography and/or ultrasound. In women at high risk of developing the disease, it is applied in preventive screening. It is the preferred method in cases where breast surgery has been previously performed, to assess potential recurrence or development of new lesions in the same or opposite breast, as well as to monitor the condition of implants.
Advantages:
High sensitivity in detecting cancerous and pre-cancerous abnormalities.
Does not use ionizing radiation.
Capability to image dense breasts, which may be challenging to evaluate with conventional mammography.
